What is the secret to a supple spine?

Updated: Jun 23, 2023

Downward Dog or Cat-Cow?

Did you know today is International Yoga Day, a global celebration of embracing the transformational practice of yoga?

As a Chiropractor, I’ve always recommended yoga and the benefit that yoga can have on your spinal health, flexibility, and overall well-being.

So this week, get ready to unlock the power of yoga and align your spine for optimal health!

But what makes yoga such a great way of looking after your spine?

#1. It can help enhance Spinal Alignment

Your spine is the backbone of your body, and maintaining its proper alignment is crucial for a pain-free life.

And practising Yoga offers a wealth of poses and exercises that gently stretch and strengthen the muscles surrounding your spine.

More important, opening up the spinal cord and nerve canals and increasing cerebrospinal fluid flow.

From the elongating stretches of the ‘Cat Cow’ to the grounding stability of ‘Mountain Pose’. Many yoga poses promote spinal alignment, improve posture, and increase mobility - reducing your risk of injury or pain.

#2. Increased flexibility

Flexibility is critical to a supple and agile spine.

Yoga postures gently stretch the muscles and ligaments, enhancing flexibility and improving the range of motion in your spine. Each movement encourages your spine to move fluidly, reducing stiffness and promoting a sense of freedom in your body.

As I always say, Motion is “Lotion”, and the movements promoted through Yoga will help you keep moving and reduce stiffness and pain.

#3. Become stronger and more stable

Yoga is about much more than being more flexible. It can also help you unlock greater balance and stability within your body.

Strong core muscles are essential for supporting your spine and maintaining good posture, and Yoga will challenge your balance and engage your core, building strength and stability throughout your spine. But remember, you are not as strong as your muscles. You are as strong as your spine.

Embrace these poses to cultivate a strong foundation, allowing you to stand tall and steady on and off the Yoga mat.

#4. Strengthen your Mind-Body Connection

One of the most profound aspects of Yoga is understanding the connection between your mind, body, and breath.

By focusing on your breath and being present in the moment, you become attuned to the subtle sensations in your spine. This heightened awareness empowers you to make conscious adjustments, promoting proper alignment and preventing injury.

Embrace the mind-body connection that Yoga offers and let it guide you towards a healthier and happier spine.

Not sure where to start?

If you're new to yoga, just start, slowly but surely.

Many Yoga studios offer ‘taster sessions’ for novices who want to ease themselves into the practice, and YouTube has 1000s of free videos to help you get started without hurting yourself.

But most importantly, remember yoga is a practice that evolves with time, and everyone's journey is unique. Be patient with yourself, listen to your body, and enjoy the process of self-discovery through Yoga.

We don’t always have the time to go to the Yoga class, so we do what we can ( a couple of spine openers) at home; the long-term rewards are invaluable.

Namaste.
